Yesterdays gospel lesson from the lectionary has been stuck in my head. It's a story Jesus tells asking asking/receiving, seeking/finding, knocking/opening. And then he talks about the giving of the Holy Spirit as a good gift. It's in Luke 11. Gotta think about that one a little more.
I reading through the Psalms of ascent right now (Psalms 120-134). I always get moved by Psalm 121, particularly the part where it says, "The Lord will protect you from all evil; He will keep your soul. The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forever." It appears that I really need to hear this right now.
Trying to get back into a better routine of praying the daily office. I've been such a bum about that lately. I'm starting to feel like I'll always struggle with this. Hopefully not :)
I spend some times yesterday perusing the old BCP and discovered a Collect about vocation. I wish I had seen this earlier when we were talking about it in church. Oh, well. It goes like this:
"Almighty God our heavenly Father, you declare your glory and show forth your handiwork in the heavens and in the earth: Deliver us in our various occupations from the service of self alone, that we may do the work you give us to do in truth and beauty and for the common good; for the sake of him who came among us as one who serves, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen."
I really liked this part: "Deliver us in our various occupations from the service of self alone, that we may do the work you give us to do in truth and beauty and for the common good."
That's what vocation is all about. It's about work that is (1) not self-serving and, thus, (2) for the common good.
each week we will have a new post through which to interact. you can post comments as often as you want under each week in order to share what you are reading, disciplines you are engaging in, or encouragement to each other.
